Hey everyone, just thought I'd post a little more information based on my recent re-torque.

Car: early '99 9-3 base, 73,000 miles

Additional tips not found in the tsb:
1) how to remove the decorative cover behind the valve cover: pull up at the back to disengage a little plastic clip, then slide back to pull two pins out of retaining holes.
2) Careful when removing the PVC nipple. Best bet is to gently remove the larger hose from it, then pull it and the smaller hose out of the valve cover. The plastic gets brittle over time, and mine shattered. $2.50 from the dealer down the street, but could be a hassle if you don't have a dealer nearby.
3) some of the valve cover bolts are difficult to get at. You'll obviously have to remove the nut that holds the hard PCV hose to the valve cover. You'll also want to loosen the nut at the bottom end of that hose. A slender 13mm box wrench will do the trick. I didn't have one, and I used an adjustable wrench, but it was a pain to get it in there. Beyond that, remove the metal clamp that holds the oil filler tube to the valve cover. You can then bend the filler tube out of the way enough to get at the valve cover bolt right there.

Findings:
1) I got my bolts from eEuroparts. At first, they looked gray, so I was afraid I got the ones Anders suggested were "no good." However, as he expected, when I compared them to my old bolts, they had a bronze tint. That means I got the newer, better ones. See Anders' member photo gallery for an explanation.
2) No sludge! I didn't expect any; I do 5000 mile changes with M1 0W40, and I had only leaked a very small amount of coolant over time, but with all the talk on this board recently, it was still a relief to see. In fact, not only were things nice and clean in there, but I could see no signs of wear on the cam followers. At 73k, I expected to see something, but it looks good as new.
3) Old bolts were all torqued at least to 60Nm, which is not what others have found. However, by looking at the non-threaded "stretch" zone on them, I could tell that the outside four bolts (7, 8, 9, and 10) had not been stretched as much as the others. From the feel of it, when I torqued the bolts the last 90 degrees, I know they were yielding (at least for the last 15-20 degrees). I bet these four bolts weren't torqued enough to yield to spec.

All-in, about 3 hours, including the trip to the dealer to get the new PCV nipple, and lots of time spent cleaning the mating surfaces for the VC gasket and dressing the new gasket. Longer than expected, but well worth it, especially for the chance to have a look under the cover.
