While fitting the new cam cover gasket to my 94 SE last month I did not need any kind of sealant or adhesive to hold the rubber gaskets in place when I flipped the cam cover over for final placement on the motor. That cam cover had little opposed nubs in the gasket channel that held things in place.
Not so with my 2000 model (do not know when they omitted them), those nubs are not there, so when you flip it over for the install....ploop, out comes the gaskets. Since I do not have six hands to hold things in place, and after trying a thin layer of grease (unsucsessfully)I went to the local Auto Zone and found some Permatex Ultra Rubber Gasket Sealant and Dressing #85409 which I applied to the cam cover side only, a very thin layer with a small screwdriver. The stuff is just tacky enough to hold everything in place. Out of the myriad of products available, this claim is what caught my attention;
"This flexible, non hardening product is like a third hand, helping hold gaskets in place for easy, exact placement and is forgiving enough to allow nealy unlimited repositioning during assembly". With this stuff, it was easy. You might want to try it.
