It's probably the same thing that you've been hearing about, there is a shift gate, but it's internal to the trans. The shift linkage does/can go out of alignment and many folks, myself included, report better shift feel and elimination of the 3rd gear crunch after realigning the shift linkage. I had an indie shop do the work, so I'm not too familiar with the procedure, but I'm pretty sure a search here will turn up the instructions.
BTW, what model, year?
