I am pretty much looking to see if the coverage is good and relatively hassle-free. So far, it appears so. That's good.

There is no question that in the long run, and over enough cars, an extended warranty is a bad deal for the car owner and a good deal for the dealer. They wouldn't be selling it if they weren't making a profit. But like any insurance, an extended warranty does two things - first, it controls your cost. You know it won't be more than what you spent for the warranty (assuming a good one). Second, there is the Are You Feeling Lucky? factor. All insurance is betting - you're betting something bad will happen, the company is betting that something bad won't.

As an example, nobody expects that their house will burn down. Yet they still buy fire insurance. And in the long run, over lots of people's houses, the insurance company makes out. (Or goes out of business). But as in the case of a car, I don't own a fleet - I own just a few (too many, my neighbors say). Probabilities don't work with small samples. So, like fire insurance, I'm betting bad things will happen.

In this case, my personal position is that I want to control my costs, and I do so by effectively buying a warranty. And I'm also spending money in order to give myself a feeling of security.

Yup - this is an individual decision, and there is no right or wrong. The only wrong is to not investigate, and to not work through the reasoning.
