I don't like adding anti-freeze, then water. That's because in order to make a 50-50 mix, you might have to put in more water than the radiator will hold. Yes, all the calculations should be right. Should be.
I make up a 50-50 blend of distilled water and anti-freeze. I then pour that in to fill the system. That way I know I've got a 50-50 blend, even with some that didn't make it all out of the system.
I will then have a bunch of 50-50 blend left over. One gallon of that goes into an anti-freeze container, marked "50-50", and it goes into the emergency kit I keep in the car. You know, that kit you keep with coolant, an extra quart of oil, an unopened brake fluid container, some power steering fluid, the old serpentine belt from last time it was changed, gloves, and of course, duct tape. That's because the sealed system sometimes becomes unsealed, and you need to replace coolant.
If any is left over, it goes into the garage for the next time I need it.
