Nick and I just had a long thread on that subject. See link below.
The upper pulley is small, and has a non-standard bearing. Small, meaning 64-mm diameter compared to the lower idler which is 80-mm and the tensioner pulley, which is 90-mm. The smaller the outside diameter, the faster it spins, looses lubrication, and wears out. Dean had a good post about why it happens a while back.
The bearing is not a common size you can find at any manufacturer. The inside diameter is smaller than normal for that size, probably so the pulley can be mounted without the added cost of a retaining washer or another part.
The lower pulley lasts much longer than the upper one, and the 90-mm steel tensioner pulley almost never goes out. I used a Dayco smooth lower idler for almost 50k miles, and it hardly seemed worn when I removed it.
I had too much trouble with the upper idlers to continue using the Saab part, and so have other people. Depending on what happens when the pulley and belt fails, evap system hoses can be damaged, or the power steering pump, or oil cooler lines, etc.
In the end, I switched to a single idler pulley with a larger diameter and a replacable bearing with a bearing insert. 6-groove idler pulleys are not unique. There are probably more alternatives. See discussion in Nick's thread linked below.
