If you had a sludge problem, you'd know it once you removed the cover. The dark areas on the side is normal from heat cycles. I've seen some so bad that clumps of oil were in the chain and there was just a mass of thick oil in the camshaft area where you couldn't even make out where the bolts were.

If you change your own oil, take a coat hanger and scrape around the bottom of the pan next oil change. That will tell you if you have a problem.
