I have noticed no mileage change with my 0W-40W oil, still getting about 33-35 mpg (mostly highway driving at a leisurely pace, recently).
As for the MBC, I have similar concerns with my car, as well as the worry of running a tank of camel pee instead of gasoline when I travel out of town. I too am flirting with the idea of a stage II ECU mod (when I sell a kidney or something).
But I installed an MBC inline set at about 6psi (0.42 bar), which does lend a noticeably crisper spool-up response. I tested this setup with a boost gauge, and it keeps almost identically the same boost pressure as stock (as you are still letting the BPC govern things above 6psi). My paranoia has been allayed, and I have been running the MBC without adverse effect for over a year. I did take it out (5-minutes) when I drove across the country this summer and hit the land of low octane gas (Iowa on west).
You can check out some rough instructions on my website, or seach for "inline MBC" on this board (and the performance one).
Best,
Lutfisk
