You cannot professionally change an ignition cassette in 90 sec.

For some reason people have a popular beleive in that you ONLY pay for the seconds that the mechanic is working on your car (tools up/tools down). Yes, that is the way the car makers do time study but then they add either hourly shop rate or extra time for all the runaround. And when it comes to warranty paid repairs, that extra time is almost non existant.

What about the time it takes when you talk to the service manager and explain your cars problem and the time the service manager talks to the mechanic? Should some people be charged more money because they don't explain and lay out their cars problem fast or clearly enough?

What about;
The time it takes to go out and pick up the car from the lot and push it into the shop?
The time it takes to hook up the tester and read/evaluate the fault codes?
The time it takes to get your order filled at the parts counter?
The time it takes for the parts guy to reorder the part?
The time it takes to remove and check or replace spark plugs?
The time it takes to check and update software in ECU?
The time it takes to test drive and confirm that you actually repaired the car?

All these seconds and minutes has to be paid for some or another way, that's just the way it is otherwise it's no use in doing this and you are left without anyone that can repair your car or you have to rely on "Honest Harry" down the street that "specialize in foreign and domestic cars".

It's easy to judge "after the facts" when the fault is found and repaired. We are all good at that (I kick myself many times when I realized how easy it was after I found the problem) and some shops might charge what feels like exorbitant shop or labor rates but they are free to do that (at least in the US).
I think it is actually a crime if all shops all over the country went together and decided on a set rate for all repairs.

Well, that's all I had to say from my soap box.

Anders
