I'm a pretty big fan of the 9-3's cargo capacity (I have a 2002 9-3 5-door). I've been able to fill the cargo area many a time with more than I expected. That's usually the case with many smaller items.
Lately, I've been less than ecstatic about what does and doesn't fit. I've had to borrow a friend's pick-up or (gasp) suv to load some cargo that couldn't fit in the 9-3. I attribute his to the non "cubic" shape of the hatch area. The cargo area is not entirely square or cubic, so it appears deceptively large. Also, with the seats folded down, there is a bar across the cargo floor that is sometimes a hindrance.
For example, I recently purchased a toy vanity table that came packed in a box. That morning, I had a 9-5 sedan loaner. The box easily slipped into the 9-5's trunk. The following day, after I had returned the loaner, I attempted to put the box into the hatch of my 9-3. It wouldn't fit. The box was too wide and too high for the cargo area. I was totally bummed. I thought my 9-3 was a do-it-all.
I don't know if these cargo quirks are the same on your previous Saab. Maybe I'm not very good at space planning and packing. If maximum cargo area is a major concern, I'd consider a 9-5 wagon. Or even a 9-5 sedan.
