Help with radio aux input...sound problems

I'm running into ipod audio problems with the aux input mod for the 9-3('00 9-3SE). I followed the same setup as others have posted, shorting "tel mute" to ground on a switch and using the "tel L" and "tel R" as inputs. I'm trying to use the belkin ipod car adapter for power and line out audio into the belkin's internal amp then to the saab's radio.
I'm using a 1/8" stereo plug and soldered the ground to the Base, Tel Right channel to Middle, and Tel Left channel to the Tip...is this correct for stereo?
First, when the audio cable is plugged into the car adapter I get good music for a few seconds and then the sound gets badly distorted. Maybe amplifier saturation? If I plug into the headphone plug on the ipod I get good audio...but...there's a second problem.
Second problem, in both configurations I get a normal volume left channel and I have to crank up the volume (and adjust the balance) to hear a very faint right channel.
I've checked continuity on my cables and everything checks out ok. I cut the trace between "Tel L" and "Tel R" and verified that there is no continuity. Good news is the radio and CD player still work fine so the problem is limited to the mod.
This will be an expensive ipod car charger if that's all I can do with it...HELP!!
thanks,
Eric
