The problem with the V6 was the timing belt issue, that and the fact that it really isn't best built engine in the world. Its an Opel engine, so it doesn't have the usual Saab durability.
The sludge issue affected some of the naturally aspirated 2.3 engines. But this can be easily avoided by using Mobil 1 and changing at least every 5k miles or so.
There also is an ongoing sludge issue with some of the 9-5 and OG9-3 2.3 engines, which is why GM extended the warantee for those engines to cover any damage done by sludge.
