They do use a lot of power. On my 2000 base 9-3, the A/C would turn the car into a dog. I'd always turn it off when leaving a stoplight or if I wanted to put the smackdown on the guy in the next lane. With my Viggen, I hear the engagement, but the power loss is almost impossible to detect. I'd speculate the compressor robs about 10hp at idle but maybe 30hp at 4000rpm.

I've heard that if you charge the A/C system too high, the compressor has to work harder. Maybe you could have the pressure checked?
