Jeff--
My guess is the sensor is in fact damaged, and needs replacing. I had almost exactly the same symptoms as you and replacement fixed things for me. The part is like $70 from reputable on-line parts places.
Have you performed the ACC diagnostic? While ACC is on, hold down 'auto' and 'off' at the same time. The system them goes through a series of electronics and motor/vent checks that takes about fifteen seconds. When it starts, you see only a '0' on the display, and if all is well the zero stays the whole time. If faults are found, the display will change to a '1' for one fault found, a '2' if a second is found, and so on. After the tests finish the display goes back to normal. Bear in mind the ACC diagnostic is only telling you the quantity of faults-- the number displayed is *not* a code, as it apparently is on the 9-5. To get the exact story I think you need an OBD code reader. When my sensor was toast, I got a '1' during the diagnostic.
Good luck!
