My '01 SE with 80K km has had one 'serious' problem: the SID (digital info display) is starting to drop pixels. This is a common issue, fixed by replacement through dealer ($), aftermarket (saabradio.com) or DIY fix reported here (variable results)
Many here with 99-01 9-3s have retorqued the headbolts proactively, because one or more of the bolts are commonly too loose in pre-2002 4 cylinder SAABS with headgasket leaks the result. DIY in a couple of hours, or have a shop do it for ~$150.
The stock exhaust is not all stainless, only bits (flexpipe). The SAAB sport exhaust is stainless.
I have dedicated snow tires for winter. Use snows if you value stopping and steering in the white stuff, which is the case for 4WD too.
These cars are prone to oil sludge build up IF non synethetic oil is combined with too=long drain intervals and stop/start driving.
If I had to do it again, I might buy a 9-5 wagon over the 9-3 hatch. Smoother ride, more room, little fuel economy hit. But I'd want an Aero, which would cost much more, as the low pressure 9-5s seem sluggish compared to my 9-3 HOT.
