I used what was like a 19 or 24 oz can of subzero r134a with a synthetic oil additive and a gauge on the hose. The gauge allows you to check your system before you chug stuff in there. Overcharging results in warmer output and more work (power drain) for the compressor.
Dean suggests 32-33 psi at the low port with the compressor running. When the compressor is not running, the readings are of no consequence. Crank your a/c on full blast with all your doors open, wait three or four minutes, and when the compressor kicks on, check the pressure at the low port.
You also have to take into account the temperature. It hasn't gotten much below 80 here until three or four in the morning. When I did mine, it was roughly 90 out so you have to compensate for high temps. At 90, I charged mine to about 45 psi and that dropped my a/c down well below 50 degrees at output. Beautiful system...
