A/C - do both hoses die or just one?

My '97 seems to have a leak in the high pressure hose - #4 shown in the diagram in the attached diagram.
A couple of questions:
- I assume I have to pull all the stuff out like I am doing a waterpump job to get to the compressor hoses at the compressor ?
- does the other hose (#5, low pressure) ever leak ? It looks like I have to remove a lot of stuff to get to the compressor and if the otehr one wears out too then I might want to do them both and avoid a repeat.
