This sounds similar to a problem that I just discovered with my 1994 V6.
SHORT VERSION STARTS AT THE --> ***
I started the car in the morning and immediately noticed the car suddenly idling very badly. I gave it a chance to cough through it to no avail, so I gave the engine a little rev to try and clear it out. It helped a little, but I was still idling fast, in the 1000-1200 range.
I drove into work and things seemed a little better, and I passed through a torrential downpour & thunderstorm along the way.
I parked the car, and when I got back to it at five, I tried to start the car and the starter was just spinning the engine. It felt like it was spinning so freely that it wasn't even trying to start.
I tried to start it a couple of times. I held the throttle open and smelled fuel so I don't think I have a fuel problem. I have since checked the air filter assembly and have even tried cranking it without the air filter assembly attached.
I had removed all of the plastic covers along the bottom of the car a few weeks ago and neglected to put it all back together, so I immediately figured the rain & moisture might be the culprit and I may have a loose or corroded connection somewhere.
*** I finally got around to putting a timing gun on the plug wires to verify whether I was getting any spark and to my surprise I was getting strong spark on 1,3,4,5,6 but only intermittent spark on #2. The timing light was flashing at only one quarter the speed on #2 than for any of the other plugs.
I also removed the timing belt cover to perform a visual inspection of the timing belt. It looks fine to the eye, though it may have slipped a few teeth and I just can't see it.
I am past due for a timing belt change. I don't have any record of it being done since 65,000, I got the car at 95,000 and now I've got it up to 140,000 miles.
I've cleaned all the connections/terminals with contact cleaner or dielectric grease where necessary, and tried to refire it but it just doesn't seem to want to light.
Any ideas? Should I be considering ordering a new coil pack at this juncture?
As always, many thanks in advance!
