I frequently travel 100s of miles from the nearest dealer. I think it would be foolhardy not to carry a DIC. Its easy to replace, versus the cost and inconvenience of being a stuck in the boonies with a dead DIC.
Under different driving conditions the choice may vary depending on ones risk aversion and DIY attitude.
Statistics on DIC failure have been released by GM to the NHTSA. Read about it at the link below. Somewhere in the thread is a link to the pdf with stats.
Perhaps GM will soon fix this with a recall that gives us more reliable DICs.
