If you are gun shy about spending 5-6K for a more recent 900, consider spending 1,500 or so on a new engine. I have transplanted two Saab (put OG 900 motor in a 99ems, and a 900-to-900 swap) and found mechanics happy to do so both times.
If you can wring another 20,000 miles out of your car, I think you're about even.
There are more "donor" cars out there than you might think...a lot of independent Saab mechanics can give good leads on where they might be.
Plus, you're keeping at least one car out of the scrap heap...just think of it as an elaborate recycling project.
