Only the very first years of the red IDMs (approx 90-92) were not equipped with knock sensors. Those were the cassettes with the wire harness molded into the whole cassette. And those engines had an old fashioned knock sensor bolted to the engine block.
When the Trionic system came along in 93 they started to use an virtuel knock sensor system built into the cassette.
