Blown engine / warranty

I had the 2000 9-3 se die under load on a mtn pass and was towed to a shop that pulled codes. P0171 and a couple of others related to misfires. The shop found #1 cylinder bent plug and replaced that and a perfectly fine DIC and sent me on the way. The next time I was on my way up a mtn pass (<400 miles later) and the car dies again, same manner, like runnung out of gas. No CEL or warning.
Now they are saying blown engine.
I am wondering about possible extended warranty from Saab. I had heard that some cases of cracked pistons were covered on out-of-warranty vehicles. This is under the supposition that this is actually what happened.
Also, I know that the shop screwed up and missed major signs that something was wrong, as well as misdiagnosing and selling me a part I didn't need. I am looking into reimbursement from them also.
