That's right. Reinforcing the knob or maybe the shaft, a futile attempt to avoid dismantling the whole dashboard. You can also help by trying not to use too much muscle when moving it.
In the air distribution box, there's a big drum that rotates when you move the air-direction-control knob. For a while they either used bad lubricant, or the drum fit too tightly in there, or something like that.
The REAL fix ($$$) is 10 hours worth of dismantling which most of us want to avoid. Or at least postpone.
