Haven't been here for a while, but thought I'd share something interesting. 3 years ago I installed a drop-in K&N filter in my son's 95 Saab 900s with the 2.3L and auto tranny. Recently, I needed to do a tune-up on the car, so ordered plugs and also a Mann air filter. To be honest, I ordered it by accident, forgetting I had a K&N in there, but I got it so I figured I'd drop it in and see what it did.
After replacing the K&N with the Mann, it felt like someone was tugging on the back bumper with a rope. I drove it for a few days, thinking maybe I messed up the plug gap or put the fuel filter in backwards or maybe cleaning the TB and IAC that something wasn't put back together right. On a lark, I put the K&N back in, and I was amazed how different the car drove - just normal driving, nothing more than that. When I put the K&N in originally, I can't remember much of a difference, but there was a Mann filter in there when i first started all this 3 years ago.
Long and short - the K&N seemed to make quite a difference, even after about 20k miles of use, as compared to a paper filter. Maybe the OEM Saab isn't as restrictive as the Mann...
Anyway, just an experience. The K&N is in there, and in inspecting the MAF sensor and intake to the TB, there wasn't any oily residue, dirt, or other horror stories about underfiltering K&N filters.
Anyone want a 2-day used Mann filter? :-)
