Generally when a clutch slips, the engine will rev way up, but the car won't go like you'd expect it to. This is most noticeable when going uphill, or putting on a lot of power on from a stoplight. The clutch cable doesn't only snap when the clutch is going. Sometimes the throwout bearing loses so much of its grease that the cable has to work way too hard to push it and it breaks from the strain. Try a manually adjustable cable from Napa. It's much cheaper than a new clutch, and could fix your problem.
