The dilemma, as I see it, is that Saab was not able to compete as a unique, even quirky car in the all important US market. Because of the price (the original 99 / 900 took a reported 40 hours to build, and don't forget the US import tarrifs), they have to compete in the incresingly popular "Sport-Luxury" market segment. The majority of persons seeking those cars care not for individuality (although they think they do - different, just like all the other Yuppies) or even engineering and quality for that matter. GM is doing their best for Saab what Ford was able to do for Volvo. I agree with you on the styling 100 percent. I drive a '95 cabriolet because my wife thinks the earlier cars are atrocious. Saab never will be the styling statement they once were, they can't afford to be.
