I had a wheel bearing go bad (on an '89 900) & it sounded just like knobby mud tires. So yeah, it can be the wheel bearing.
Lift up a rear corner & take off the wheel. You might have to push the brake pads away from the rotor so you can feel the bearing.
If that doesn't turn up anything, it might be the front. Sounds can travel in funny ways when you're sitting inside the car.
