Since there have been no takers on your question, I'll give it a try. When I did my insert hookup, I used a propane torch to heat the hose and slide it on the barb. A hair drier would have been a better choice but is sure did the job fast. I made sure there was no fuel around for obvious reasons.
I left the original check valve in because it wasn't causing any problems. Some complain about breaking the connectors to the pump but mine came off and went back on without issue. The biggest problem seems to be getting the big retaining ring off. There's a special SAAB tool but I just cut a wood block to fit and applied a large force.
