Hard to tell without seeing them, but I popped off one of the adjuster arms on my headlights once so I think I know what you're talking about. Do you know that there are two adjusters per headlight? One controls Left/Right (that nice big knob that you can easily reach behind the light unit) and the other controls Up/Down (a small hex socket that is hard to reach on the outside side of the light unit). I popped one of my L/R adjuster arms when I turned it too far once. I found that it's easiest just to remove the side marker/blinker assembly (one screw) to access the Up/Down adjuster through the hole in the fender.
