My '01 has 90K km, runs like a top (a fast top with a great 3rd gear), has super seats, carries a lot of stuff, looks good, is safe and comfortable, gets good fuel economy, and the dawgs love it. I doubt I could replace it with a car with similar virtues at anywhere near a reasonable price. It has no sludge; I replace the oil frequently, check the PCV system to keep it that way, and carry a DIC in the trunk since its a potential problem that s waay- easy to fix on the road. Why would I ditch it?
I also have a toyota pickup with a V6 which, for many other people, has popped head gaskets left and right and requires a timing belt change every 70K miles. Yet mine has nearly 200K miles and few problems (well, one head gasket).
Point? Lots of vehicles can have problems. The standard deviation on frequency of a particular problem is large, so except for a few particular failure modes mean statistics are not a reliable predictor for what will happen with _your_ car. Finally, best not to worry in the abstract: drive and be happy!
