I really can't comment on the 96 900 but on my 1999 9-3 I replaced the strut mounts and bearings when I did the struts. The 1999 and newer uses Boge/Sachs. I had nice Koni dampers in but one died so I had to replace them in a hurry. I put in KYB and like them so far. Opinion on KYB is questionable. I hear that they do not last long and get very stiff after a while. Since much of the cost is labor to put these in one has to be wary of putting in a less than stellar strut. That being said, I'm glad I did it because I like that it is stiffer than stock but not stiff like a Bilstein.
Regardless of strut opinions, I would do the strut bearings and mounts when you do it. You can save money by buying the bearings and mounts yourself from EEuroparts.com
