On the contrary....

I leave mine in for just that very reason. Im going to protect my vehicle. Its not my fault you plowed into the back of me, now take your lumps! .... The original post claims the driver in front stopped short, more like you were following too close. Traffic law says that you need to leave enough room to stop your vehicle regardless of what happens in front of you. No one to blame but yourself.

Now on to your point. I agree it should not protrude into the sidewalk and pose a danger to everybody. But out on the street, fair game.

And on a closing note, sorry about your saab Mike. Sad situation.
