New Clutch??

Hi,
I have posted a few times to this board both as an advice seeker and giver. My car is a 98 900S with 243K (no typo). It is practically all original and runs like a top. Currently it needs a valve cover gasket which I can do on my own but now it seems to need a clutch.
I was told this by the mechanic who put my snow tires on. He said it was “engaging high” I have had this car since day one and have never touched the clutch. To me the engagement seems fine and past experience has taught me that clutches tend to slip when they are worn and mine does not slip at all.
So my question are these:
How can I be sure my clutch is on its way out before it starts to slip? Engagement seems to be fine at about 1/4-1/3 (of the full pedal movement) release from the floor.
If it is on its way out how much is reasonable to pay?
Thanks and Happy New Year!
Rob
