Once you've found sludge under the valvecover or otherwise, the very fine screen on the oil pickup tube is most likely already clogged up with crud. So, 'running it hard' at this point would likely cause oil starvation.
At this point, you would want to drop the subframe to remove the oilpan and clean the sludge from the screen and pan. Some have even widened the holes on the screen, as it would be better for the oil filter to catch small particles than the screen for the oil pickup tube.
