Just wanted to post an update. I finally was able to drop the tank and check out my fuel leak and smell and the reason behind the incorrect (1/2 too low) gauge reading. Turns out the white fuel pump housing was broken and badly damaged--at the top, though, not the bottom. Also a crack near the fuel lines on the lid, hence the bad smell inside. The springs that allow for flex were bent and trashed, leading to the fuel gauge problem. Oddly enough, it was still driving well so I guess the Walbro pump insert inside was still OK with 162k on the car. But I was having to keep all windows down the smell was so bad now.
New pump on order, will complete job next weekend. I'll post photos of the job and of the damaged pump when I'm done.
