Odd dealership alternator diagnosis, a bit long....

For the last post[s], I've been chronicling the latest issue with my car. After gettting the idler pulley and belt replaced ($400 later--see earlier post) my car has developed a strange whining/squealing/whirring noise that's coming from the belt area. It's particularly noticeable when the car is cold. When it warms up, it's barely audible.
I brought it to the local dealership and they told me it's the alternator going bad and offered to fix it for $900. I said no thankyou and brought it home.
The strange thing about it being the alternator is the fact that when I accelerate (again, more noticeable when the engine is cold) the noise gets louder and louder until I let off the gas and then the noise returns to it's normal annoying pitch. Forgive my ignorance, but does the alternator "match" the engine speed, therefore causing the noise to increase? I always thought it stayed at a steady rate regardless of the engine's rpm's...
Thanks for any thoughts, sorry so long!
