Over the last 14 months, my check engine light has come on and gone off. In September 2005, if finally stayed on for a while. I finally took it in to a great shop in northern Virginia. After checking the codes, it was determined that I needed a new DI Cassette. Of course, I was not happy about this as I only replaced it 4 years ago.
After 350 miles with the new DI Cassette, the check engine light came on again. The shop then determined I needed a new O2 sensor. Fast forward 4 and 8 weeks, and the shop (for free) replaced the 02 sensors a few more times as the codes indicated problems with them.
After the 5th time in the shop, I was told that the codes for the check engine light indicated a bad computer. After replacing the computer, I was good for about 600 miles. Then, the check engine light came on yet again.
I brought it back to the shop today and was now told that I needed a new main engine wiring harness. This is so rare (so I am told) that they do not even have the part in the U.S.
Since it has taken so many times to figure this out, the shop is refunding me for the O2 sensor and labor. (A nice act of good will.) However, I now will have to still cough-up $530 for the wiring harness and labor, minus the previous O2 sensor install.
Question: Has anyone else ever experienced this type of problems with a 1996 900SE turbo? Should this major electical job do the trick? Would a bad main engine wiring harness fry a computer and two O2 sensors? Is there a way to check the old wiring harness for problems after it is all removed?
Any advice or feedback about this situation would be appreciated.
