Is there any chance you could differentiate a catalytic converter smell (sometimes like rotten eggs) vs a burning smell from brakes or a clutch? The brakes and clutch smell alike when they burn. I guess you might not smell it unless you were moving slowly or stopped if it was the brakes, or at least the back brakes.
My back brakes made a burning smell after driving 40 minutes or so one time. I am at 103K miles on my beloved 9-3 and had this one thing happen to me. When I got out of the car I could smell it and follow the smell to a particular wheel. It turns out that I should have used new pins when putting in new rear brake pads. The parts place suggested that I did not need them. The pads were sticking on the pins and not sliding back so they rubbed against the rotors.
This probably is not what is happening to you but it's worth checking.
The smell could also be some oil leaking out of the valve cover gasket onto the engine and burning off the engine after long trips.
Other causes of bad gas mileage I can think of. Worn/dirty plugs. Dirty air filter or obstructions in the air filter. A giant pig strapped to teh roof. ;) Faulty oxygen sensor; although that might get the CEL to go on. There are a couple of more that I cannot think of. If you have a 1995, you probably don't have an ignition cassette. If that is true, the wires may need replacing. Does the car run well?
Was the car worked on prior to this happening?
