Rereading your old post, as long as the threads were previously in good shape, I suspect (and hope) the brass is gone, not the threads in the pan. Especially if you can still turn it a bit by hand with effort.
I haven't done a Helicoil myself but will have to install one pretty soon (long story) on my 1987 Acura Legend (203k). If you search Helicoil on the NG900 board, you'll find several posts. For example, see below. The Helicoil Thread Repair Kit has a drill bit, tap, and insert (coil). You buy the size of the thread that is trashed, drill out the old threads, run a tap to make new threads, thread in the insert/coil, then break off the end of the coil. The coil compresses and makes new strong threads. The Emhart website is clunky but you can figure out more there. http://www.emhart.com/products/helicoil.html
If you buy one and find a good source online, let me know. I haven't found them locally yet.
On my V6, the drain plug is M14 x 1.5, fine thread. You'll want to verify the threads on your plug before buying. Good luck!
