Dean, thanks for your interest in this. I've read many of your other posts and respect your advise. The problem is mainly fan speed. Sometimes it's hard to tell if everything else is OK without air output. The fan either doesn't respond to manual changes, or if it does it reverts to lower speeds even if manually set at higher speeds. Sometimes I can turn the car off, then switch it back on and it will operate according to selected settings, then it will either stay that way or lower fan speed despite settings. One mechanic said he thought there was an error code indicating that 2 of 4 vent control motors weren't working, but the vents do seem to switch OK - that is if the fan is running and I can actually tell. Another mechanic speculated that the ignition switch may be starting to fail and I should check to see if the windows operate OK when the fan is failing (they do). I'm reluctant to spend any more money having mechanics go on fishing expeditions and I'm hoping that someone in this forum has a good idea of what's causing the problem. That said, if I could solve it by replacing with a manual control unit I might be happier anyways. If a manual unit is usable, is it dependent on any of the sensors that exist for the ACC?
