New Hydraulic clutch on my 98 -- Soft and to the floor!

I just had a new hydraulic clutch installed on my 98 900 SE T.
I HATE the new clutch feeling, and a couple others who drove it agreed. But the dealer/mechanics say that is standard, and various of their team drove it.
I have gone from a car I adore [the clutch work needed to be done b/c there was problems with it slipping when parked/in reverse].
It is SO SOFT, and goes all the way to the floor, with the engagement about 1 - 1.5 inches off the floor. I have been driving various clutches for 15 years, and I find myself stalling or having to be very careful shifting in low gears.
I have been told this is normal, and it will stiffen. But I now hate my drive, and might even sell this car since I no longer enjoy driving it.
I have had my car since 35K miles and this is the first clutch work, to my knowledge. Also, the clutch was always firm.
I am SO unhappy with how it drives. Are there any options??
Have you felt this??
