Also have a 2.3 N/A engine on my '95 NG900. Had a slight coolant weep at the left front corner of the head a few months ago and decided to retorque the head.
Upon removing the valve cover gasket found all surfaces clean - no sludge. The engine had sporatic maintenace over the years - the oil had been changed every 5,000 - 7,000 miles and with 130K on the odometer, the fact that there wasn't any sludge has to be due to something other than maintenance.
