97 SET Coolant Temp Sensor

I replaced the coolant temp sensor in the block and unknowingly gave it one too many turns and snapped it off in the block!!! I was able to get the rest of the part out, luckily. Does anyone know if there is some tightning requirements for this or a torque value? Another question also comes to mind. Is there any other defective part that would make my temp gauge become squirrelly? I turn the ignition key to on first thing in the morning and its already at the 3/4 postion. I jumps up and down from time to time also. Thermostat seems fine. Just want to make sure it wouldn't be the gauge before I go and purchase another sensor. Any advice would be great!
