I think you're suffering a bought of urealistic expectations-the odds of a $5000 ANYTHING being totally trouble free is extremely unlikely. People don't trade cars in after they do a bunch of maitenance, they trade them in before. So from this point forward, any time you buy a car in this price range, simply ASSUME it will need to be brought up to date in terms of maintence--even if it's a Toyota you bought from your sainted mother. Driving costs money, and you can pay in the form of payments or you can make repairs. You could lease say, a new Civic for $250 month, but that's $3000 a year. Or you can drive an older Saab and spend $1000 to $1500 a year on repairs, give or take. Unfortunately there's no free lunch.
