I had a similar sympton and had a check throughout including timing belt. My 2002 w/80k has become louder in general. I can tell because I have to scream so the passenger can hear me. I spoke with a few people on this and it came down to the engine not being as sound as it used to be. Parts and pieces loosen over time and the engine becomes louder. Even starting my car sounds completely different then when new.
