1995 900s naturally aspirated with auto trans (5 door)

Most of you have heard me bemoaning my mgp here before... but my indie presented me with an interesting possibility that could explain my mpg plus a very low growl at low rpms (usually 1600-1900).

He thinks perhaps my cat is in dire shape. I saw a picture of someone here who changed cats and cut open his old one to see the state of affairs and took a shot of it. It looks like the inside of a vacuum cleaner bag that had never been changed. My car has 161k and I wouldn't be surprised if my cat looked similar inside.

1) Have any of you had similar experiences with the death of your cats?

2) Do you have any recommendations for a cheap performance replacement?

PS I just passed CA smog a few months back. Recently replaced O2 sensor and mileage went from 16 mpg to 19.5 mpg...
