1997 NG900 SET – 165K+ miles
Background: Had fuel filter replaced at service 2 years or so ago. Eighteen months ago my fuel pump left me stranded on my b-day. Several months ago my gas gauge started to get flaky. Boost, temp, everything else in the dash show no signs of failure and are accurate. Fresh oil, plugs, techron, car in good shape, etc.
Details: Finally took my car in to get it diagnosed. Thought it was the fuel-sending unit, as the “bang” on the dash routine did not work to bring it back to life. Al at Impact Motors (Rochester) has been great, but the car's been apart for the last two days. He originally stated that it was the gas gauge, as he checked my original assumption of the fuel-sending unit, and found it to be false.
From over the phone, I was told he replaced the gauge. Unfortunately, that didn’t work. He took the dash apart, cleaned all the contacts, etc., but the gauge still doesn’t work. He traced the wire(s) all the way to the tank. Nothing. Re-checked the sending unit, checked with a working unit, and still the gauge doesn’t work. He’s stumped, and suggested I try the dealer. He’s (in Rochester) where I bought the car and trust to do the work I can’t – yes, he’s worth making the 90-mile drive from here in Buffalo. I’ll try the dealer (most likely Checkpoint) if I can't get it solved.
Questions: Anybody come across an issue where it wasn’t the dash, wires, or the fuel pump/tank/sending unit?!! I’ll search some more, but hadn’t found anything since this started months ago.
Would the ECU have anything to do with this issue? I do have an SQR stage III. I guess I can try to swap out with the spare “backup” I have, but it’s stock. :o(
Thanks for reading, and as always, I appreciate any help!

P.S. For service in Rochester, I have to again plug Al at Impact Motors, as he gives 100% effort everytime. He's stumped, spent several hours swapping parts, checking everything over, and in the end charging me an hour labour (I'm trying to offer and pay more!). He's terrific, and despite not getting this done, he fixed my exhaust manifold leak and countless other items I haven't been able to do myself! So visit him on the East side of Rochester. I'd say mention my name, but I think he cringes when he hears of me coming! :o)
