This is sadly true story and a follow up the posting I made about a week ago asking for advice regarding whether it was worth getting my SAAB repaired.
I just Paid $1700 for my formally trusted indi mechanic to have clutch replaced and some other work (not worth mentioning) on my 1997 SE Turbo vert with 82k miles (bought used with 54k miles). It took him 8 days to get into the car and replace the clutch. He is from Iran and had to leave last Saturday (2 days ago) to visit family for 2-3 weeks. He didn't have time to replace the clutch cable and left it in my truck. He said my current clutch cable wasn't yet worn old and didn't need replacement, but he said that the cable seems to to be self-adjusting and should be replaced anyway in about a month or 2 (I didntt understand that part from him).
I drove the car off. The clucth engaged, the car drove fine. I drove about 10 miles downtown Seattle to meet a friend for lunch. Then, while driving downtown, suddenly I couldn't get into gear with the engine on, except I could barely get into reverse. I called my mechanic he paid to have the car towed back to his shop. The car shifts fine and the clutch seems to engage when the car turns off so he told me the transmission is fine. He thinks the clutch cable needed to be replaced.
He then left on a flight to Iran and left the car with the garage next to his with a note to attach the new clutch cable. He gave me his Ford Explorer to use until he returned, in case the mechanic couldn't fix the clutch. He told me he wouldn't charge me anymore money if he had to fix the clutch kit when he returned (Thank God).
I am totally freaked out. Clearly, when I drove the car to my mechanic about 10 days ago, my car was drivable, but the clutch was seriously slippling out of gear. Now the car does not shift at all when the engine is on. Is this likely a clutch cable issue? Could my mechanic have also improperly installed the clutch? It did shift and drive fine for about 15 minutes and 10 miles.
Is it possible my mechanic does some serious damage to my car?
Any advice would help.
At least he gave me a Ford Explorer which seems to have a strong transmission.....
