Look for a documented maintenance history, and low(er) miles. Dry engine, relatively few squeaks and rattles (they'll only get worse). Just normal stuff, like whether the front end tracks correctly and clunking over road joints etc,

wear on upholstery. Check the SID pixels. The usual problems on these cars can be found by searching the list. Auto tranny is pretty bulletproof.

You should be able to find a 97 or 98 se with under 100K miles for under $5k. I'd pay a little more for a particularly nice example or desirable color (there's a awful lot of black and dk. green ones out there!)
