Well, I’m finished! I rewired the two motor leads and replaced the low speed resistor (I used an Aluminum Housed Resistor 50W 0.22 OHM by Arcol). I riveted the resistor to the plastic shroud and also secured a wire tie around it for assurance and peace of mind. The motor leads I soldiered, after removing the old ones, and the connector end wires I crimped right at the connectors.
Who knows how long the resistor had been open. I can tell you that the car is definitely staying cooler under the hood.
I guess the answer to the original post is to MAKE CERTAIN the fan runs after the car is shut off on hot days. You can also check that the low speed fan relay is the one energizing and de-energizing the fan when it’s operating. This can be done by somewhat firmly pressing your thumb on top of the relay and feeling it make and break. I say firmly, because any relay operating in the fuse box will be somewhat felt at all other relays.
Hope this is helpful to others, (wire and relay under ten bucks Vs 410.00 for new assembly)
I also flushed the coolant and changed out the thermostat, Coolant temperature sender, and all hoses except the TB coolant hose which wasn’t immediately available at eEuroparts.
Later,
Gabe
